Our Hawaiian adventure did not start until the evening of Saturday, March 8th as we had an 8 PM flight out of Anchorage. This proved to be a beneficial time table as it gave us time to decompress, prepare, and pack for our getaway. Both Scott and I worked tirelessly all week, both anxious to leave our jobs for 2 weeks (mostly due to what we would come back to find) which left us little time or energy to fully pack or prepare for our trip. Of course I, with my excited and prepared demeanor (read some what type A personality and OCD tendencies) had been planning and pulling items to pack for about 2+ weeks. Scott jokingly compared me to a little kid who has their suitcase packed and ready a month before summer camp starts. We cleaned the house, assembled all our gear, double checked our lists, and then ran some last minute errands around town.
Scott got his hair cut which ended up being a comical affair. En route to the hair salon I debated between two haircuts - the typical dude crew cut that Scott usually gets when needing to clean up or a trimmed up version of his lovely long locks. Please note I was deciding Scott’s hair cut upon his request not my own controlling tendencies. I explained to the hair dresser the two considerations and she willingly said she would start long and go from there. I waited in the sitting area until I was summoned for inspection. When I saw her version of a trimmed up cut I had to stifle a laugh and I saw Scott looking at me in the mirror with the same smirk. Let’s just say the hair dresser did not share the same vision and rather gave Scott what he would describe as a Dorothy Hamilton hair cut. As politely as I could, I said it was not what I had imagined and looked more like a woman’s short hair cut than anything else. She went on to do the shorter version which turned out great.
We quickly started to realize we were running out of time and before we knew it we were saying goodbye to our pups and heading out the door to the airport. We bought our tickets with Alaska Airlines miles, so even though we were leaving Alaska at 8 PM we would not arrive to Hawaii until mid day the next day due to a lengthy layover in Seattle. Our flight to Seattle was a little delayed as they had to let a passenger off and fill her seat with another passenger (not quite sure what that was about). We were sitting next to a Dad traveling solo with a cute little 1 year old girl who affectionately requested whatever anyone was having around her - whether it be a piece gum or a whole bagel. The flight was smooth and we landed in Seattle a little riled up even though it was past midnight. We did a lap around the gate to stretch our legs and then nestled into our “beds” for the long layover. I did not think I would be able to sleep and spent time doing school work and before I knew it Scott was waking me up to grab some breakfast. We grubbed, got our seats changed so we could sit together and boarded the plane to Hawaii!
